US 26622 - Write to communicate ideas for a purpose and audience (4 credits)
Students' writing skills will be developed and assessed throughout the year. Pieces of writing may be taken from all curriculum areas, not just English/Literacy. Students will keep a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed at the end of the year. Students will have an opportunity to edit their writing before it is submitted for assessment. Three pieces of writing that meet the standard are required for this assessment.
US 26624 - Read with understanding (3 credits)
Just as they will for the writing standard, students will also keep a portfolio of evidence towards the reading standard. Due to the nature of the assessment, students may not count a talking book as something they have read. Three pieces of reading are required for this assessment. Evidence will be collected from any curriculum area and kept as evidence. The text needs to be complex enough to provide the assessor with evidence that the student can read with understand (ie. comprehend what they read).
US 26625 - Actively participate in spoken interactions (3 credits)
This standard assesses a student's ability to actively participate in spoken interactions. A formal speech or monologue is not evidence towards this assessment. Students are assessed on their verbal and non-verbal behaviour, as well as appropriate language and tone.
AS 1.10 - Form personal responses to independently read texts, supported by evidence (4 credits)
You will need to keep reading all year. This assessment requires students to make 6 personal responses. Four of the responses must be on written texts. Two of these must be based on extended texts (novels). The last two text may be on visual, written or aural texts. If the student enjoys reading, all six texts could be completed using novels. The texts must be at a Level 1 standard. Students will be required to hand in two personal responses each term.
AS 1.6 - Construct and deliver an oral text (3 credits)
Students will need to write and present a speech to the class. For the Literacy course, students are required to do a demonstration speech. They must demonstrate a skill correctly, listing all the steps and developing their speech by including additional information.
